Tidal Development Programme

Following the successful signing of the licence to develop Alderney's tidal resources, ARE commissioned detailed hydrographical and geographical surveys of its licence area.

These surveys were carried out by Osiris Projects (www.osirisprojects.co.uk) and the data was modelled and reviewed by Black and Veatch (www.bv.com) and Parsons Brinckerhoff (www.pbworld.com).

These studies have confirmed that the extractable energy contained within ARE's licence area exceeds 3 GW;

This area has been further defined as 3 project areas that fall within the 3 main tidal streams around Alderney: 1 The Race; 2 The Casquets; 3 The Ortac Channel.

The Business Development Plan written to support the delivery of these individual projects is fully supported by a streamlined consenting process that is regulated by ACRE. A Regional Environmental Assessment Framework has also been developed to support the consenting process.

ARE is seeking to develop strategic contracts that will deliver the full lifecycle Engineering, Procurement, Construction (EPC) and Operation and Maintenance (O and M) requirements for the Tidal Development Programme.

ARE has a strong relationship with OpenHydro (www.openhydro.com) which has a 38% shareholding in ARE. OpenHydro installed the first; 16m 2.2 MW turbine in the EDF Paimpol Project in France in November 2011. Further turbines were installed in 2016.  Naval Energies (www.naval-energies.com), the French Naval Contractor, has acquired a majority shareholding in OpenHydro.
